Salesforce Urges Suppliers to Reduce Carbon Emissions, Adds Climate to Contracts

Quick take: The Sustainability Exhibit is the set of sustainability-related terms that Salesforce aims to include in supplier contracts. With the Exhibit, we ask suppliers to set science-based targets, increase sustainability disclosures, and deliver carbon-neutral products and services — all as part of their contractual obligations to Salesforce.

The Salesforce perspective:

  • At Salesforce, the environment is one of our key stakeholders. As part of our 1.5 degree Celsius Science Based Target, we are actively working with suppliers to set science-based targets of their own by 2024.
  • Today, Salesforce is introducing new climate commitments that will be integrated in supply chain contracts to help suppliers reduce their carbon emissions. We will work collaboratively with suppliers in determining the right sustainable path forward.
  • Only when customers and suppliers prioritize data-driven climate action together will we achieve impactful change at scale.

One of Salesforce’s key suppliers, Marriott International, agrees that the customer and supplier relationship is key in fighting climate change. “At Marriott International, we understand the value of data in decision making – and that’s why we’ve been working with Salesforce to share sustainability data, including individual hotel carbon footprint,” said Denise Naguib, VP, Sustainability & Supplier Diversity, Marriott International. “Climate action will take partnerships across the supply chain, and we all accomplish more on our climate efforts when our customers and suppliers strive to do better.”

Subject: Integrating Sustainability Into Our Supply Chain and Contracts by Working Together to Build a More Sustainable future for All

Dear Salesforce Supplier,

Today we are announcing the inclusion of the Sustainability Exhibit as part of our procurement contracts moving forward. The Sustainability Exhibit will help our suppliers reduce their carbon footprint while also further integrating sustainability into every aspect of our supply chain.

At Salesforce, we consider the environment to be a key stakeholder and we are committed to harnessing our culture of innovation to improve the state of the world. We leverage the power of our people and our products to reduce the impact that we and our customers have on the planet.

With that goal, Salesforce is committed to a 1.5 degree Celsius science-based target in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement to avoid some of the worst effects of climate change.

At Salesforce, we have achieved net-zero operations greenhouse gas emissions, will reach our 100% renewable energy goal this year, all of our products are carbon-neutral, and we are committed to working with our suppliers to set science-based targets of their own by 2024.

With that in mind, we want to collaborate more deeply with you on climate action. With the Sustainability Exhibit, we are asking suppliers to join us on this journey to protect our planet and prioritize sustainability by committing to the principles laid out in our Sustainability Exhibit in our next agreement, including setting science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We recommend collaborating with your corporate sustainability team or a similar department in advance to review the Sustainability Exhibit as it will become part of renewals of our supplier contracts.

Please contact [email] if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you in advance for your continued collaboration and engagement with Salesforce to build a more sustainable future for all.

Regards,

Craig Cuffie, EVP & Chief Procurement Officer

Patrick Flynn, VP, Sustainability
