Bands scheduled to perform at Dreamforest
LT Smooth
Born and raised in Aotearoa, New Zealand, LT Smooth spent many years of his life under the influence of drugs and alcohol, running from the law and the people that loved him most. He’s now eighteen years sober and would not change a thing. Music has changed his life, his lyrics echo the journey through struggles he has conquered. Smooth uses his music to help, encourage, heal, and mend what we go through in life.
The Sam Chase & The Untraditional
The Sam Chase has a voice like a nun on the lam with a mouthful of cigarettes and curse-words in a lonely bar, drunkenly dancing next to a broken jukebox. The San Francisco band blends rock with folk while maintaining the sensibilities and attitudes that come from growing up on a healthy diet of punk rock. Their most recent album, one they describe as a “rock opera album” “The Last Rites of Dallas Pistol” was released this month. A Sam Chase performance promises lyrical hyperbole and guitar, and if you’re lucky, additional strings in the form cello, standup bass, banjo, and even fiddle.
MJ’s Brass Boppers
Attending a MJ’s Brass Boppers show is the next best thing to following a brass band down New Orleans’ famed Claiborne Avenue. The swinging and singing brass-line is the Bay Area’s only New Orleans-style brass band whose founding members were born and raised in New Orleans. MJ’s Brass Boppers’s sound has been meticulously formed over years of practicing and experimenting. They’ve played everywhere from concert halls to street corners, fusing classic cultural New Orleans performance with funk, jazz, modern pop, and a second line twist.
Amazing Embarrassonic Human Karaoke Machine
The Amazing Embarrassonic Human Karaoke Machine is an interactive rockstar fantasy experience that allows you to front a real, live, three-piece rock band. Karaoke is in the title, which means they’ve got guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, a stage, and a repertoire of over 500 songs — but without you, they’re nothing but a jazz/fusion instrumental headache. So, pick a song you’re familiar with on their song list, and sign up to sing with the Amazing Embarrassonic!
Laura & Anton
Laura Weinbach and Anton Patzner of Bay Area indie art-pop group Foxtails Brigade, strip down from their usual full-band arrangement to a minimal two-piece guitar, violin, and vocal duet. As Laura & Anton, the seasoned players, having toured Europe and the U.S. and shared stages with countless bands, bring their low-key yet equally engaging talent for elegant French-cafe, classic jazz, and romantic original songs in this intimate lineup.
The Purple Ones
Oakland California’s The Purple Ones are a Prince cover band that treats their source material with the utmost respect. The musical dexterity of The Purple Ones – with 12 pieces on stage including a full horn section – completely turns the concept of a Prince tribute band on its head.
Mariachi San Francisco
Hailing from Jalisco and Michoacán, Mexico, Mariachi San Francisco has been one of Northern California’s favored Mariachi bands since the early ‘90s. Their nine-piece Mariachi band pays homage to a musical expression that dates back to the 18th century in Western Mexico. Get ready to hear them play a variety of styles ranging from Rancheras and Cumbias to Waltz and Classical.
The New Classics
The New Classics is a modern classical ensemble that performs popular music from Bach to Bruno Mars. Different configurations of piano, violin, cello, and classical guitar bring a creative spin to favorite songs. This Bay Area music collective has a revolving list of members who participate.
Kofy Brown
Kofy Brown, an Oakland-based musician, singer, and songwriter has been a pioneer in the Bay Area’s hip-hop soul scene since the early ‘90s. She and her band have a reputation for putting on an outstanding live show. Her music is a soulful combination of funk, rock, blues, and hip-hop topped off with a singing and rap style she calls “word song.”
Katie Cash
The alt-country music of Katie Cash harkens to a time when rock-n-roll inspired revolution. In the manner of legends, the East Bay-based artist handles her guitar with an unparalleled command, embodying the music with every fiber of her being — hair flung as staccato punctuations to the heart she wears on her sleeve. A recent recipient of the Independent Music Award for “Gift Horse” in Design: Album Art/Photography, Cash is a prolific performer that plays locally.
Yacht Club of Paris
Yacht Club of Paris is Ross Howe’s recent Gypsy Jazz project, it features some of the best swing players in the Bay Area. Their sound is both faithful to the swing aesthetic and boldly modern and improvisational in a refreshing way. If you enjoy watching and listening to swing bands, you’re in luck.
Little Kids Rock
Little Kids Rock is a nonprofit that transforms lives by restoring, expanding, and innovating music education in schools. Their network of thousands of K-12 teachers across 45 states leads a national movement that brings innovative and inclusive music education to students. Using genres including rock, pop, Latin, and rap, the program empowers teachers to build music programs as diverse as the kids they serve. The world of music expands through innovation. Little Kids Rock ensures that music education does as well. Watch program participants rock out at Dreamforest.
Bayonics
Born in the San Francisco Mission District, the Bayonics mix Reggae and Latin music to create a style as unique as the city they call home. They carry on the tradition of genre-bending Bay Area groups such as Santana and Sly & The Family Stone. Fronted by legally blind singer Jairo Vargas, the band’s 2019 album Resilience (City Roots Entertainment) dropped in August. Are you someone who enjoys modern Latin-tinged Reggae music? Then Bayonics is for you.
More bands are still confirming.
