The Next Evolution of Superbadges on Trailhead

Superbadges are being reimagined to make learning more hands-on and practical while giving you a way to build confidence in your skills.
What makes something super? Often defined as “beyond the ordinary”, being super means going above and beyond the status quo. It indicates a high level of achievement and excellence in a specific area. With this as inspiration, and feedback from Trailblazers like you, we set out to supercharge the next iteration of superbadges. Here’s a sneak peak of what we have planned.
Let’s start with a quick overview of ways to get hands-on on Trailhead, Salesforce’s free online learning platform. Superbadges are scenario-based challenges that allow you to demonstrate the skills you’ve obtained along your learning journey. Think of them as a technical capstone that proves you’re ready to implement what you learned in the real world. Superbadges are one type of hands-on learning available on Trailhead. Before jumping into a superbadge, you’ll likely learn through Trailhead projects which provide step-by-step instructions to guide you through each action required to achieve a specific goal. Projects are a great starting point for learning new skills! Superbadges then challenge you to apply what you’ve already learned by designing and building solutions for real-world use cases — without step-by-step guidance. They test your ability to think critically and solve problems, just like you would on the job. Now, let’s get into the changes to superbadges that will be rolling out in the coming months.
A simplified taxonomy
Superbadges will no longer be considered credentials. Instead, our technical skill assessments will be simplified into superbadges of similar lengths, taking about 1-3 hours to complete. All superbadge units that align with the updated delivery format will be re-branded into superbadges. All long-format (6+ hours) superbadges will either be retired or converted into the new delivery format. Additionally, all super sets and multiple-choice capstones will be retired, and the terms “superbadge units” and “super sets” will no longer be used. Any superbadges units and super sets you’ve earned will still be displayed on your Trailblazer profile, and all points you’ve earned will be retained. This change will allow you to engage hands-on with topics and features that are relevant to you.
Greater flexibility allows you to learn your way
Updates to the superbadge security policy will now allow you to collaborate to complete superbadges. Learn by yourself or learn with a group — the choice is yours! The intention of superbadges is to assess your technical skills, but you’re allowed to leverage the Trailblazer Community to help you get unstuck. Additionally, each superbadge references Trailhead knowledge articles to help you along the way. Trailblazers are advised not to post videos or full solutions. We’re making this change to encourage learning in a way that simulates real-world experiences and is more conducive to how you learn.
An improved learner experience on Trailhead
Prerequisites will no longer be required to unlock access to superbadges. Every superbadge will still have a list of recommended, not required, Trailhead learning to ensure you have the right expectations and are set up for success. So if you have the relevant knowledge — dive right in!
A new webpage layout will make superbadge expectations more clear and provide a more accessible experience. Plus, tracking your progress will be easier than ever!

How to prepare
These changes will be rolling out on Trailhead in the next couple of months. While we work to make these updates, superbadges will still be up-and-running. All superbadge units, superbadges, and super sets plus any points you earn will be retained on your Trailblazer profile, even if they are retired in the future.
