Learn the emotional intelligence basics
IQ tests are the traditional way to measure your ability to reason, but an IQ score alone doesn’t completely account for your full range of thinking and reasoning skills.
The definition of “intelligence” has grown in the past two decades to include not just raw intellect, but also our emotional, creative, and artistic skill sets. An individual’s EQ refers to their ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotional responses.
Emotionally intelligent employees are highly in demand, as they are able to thrive in and adapt to complex workplace dynamics. Using our Develop Emotional Intelligence trail, you can work to improve your professional relationships with EQ strategies from ASU, with modules on:
- Emotional Intelligence: Discover how to use self-awareness and self-management to strengthen relationships and be more productive.
- Relationship Building: Learn how to respond to your teammates with empathy and foster an environment of trust.
Those who lead in their organizations — and those who want to — will find that relationship-building is crucial. Developing trust, inspiring others, and working well with a team are all essential skills needed in management. An EQ approach also enables employees to turn challenges into opportunities to create great customer experiences and encourage customer loyalty.
And for any employee, self-awareness, self-management, and empathy are necessary to work well with others. Luckily, these are all abilities that improve the more we consciously practice them. So no matter your current starting point, you can work to hone your EQ and improve these skills!
Expand your EQ
This interactive trail allows you to truly grow your EQ skills. The modules are designed to give you the space to pause, reflect, and then apply the EQ practices you learn to realistic business scenarios.
A variety of click-and-drag activities and fill-in-the-blank prompts in both modules will give you a starting point to see how you can engage your own EQ in the workplace.
Take control of your career
Taking the time to skill up your EQ will not only help you stay productive and take more effective action in the workplace, but it will also give you more control over your career by helping you stand out in your organization.
This modular trail was developed by Trailhead in collaboration with ASU in order to introduce the essential elements of EQ. If you want to learn more, you can also explore ASU’s online course.
The skills related to emotional intelligence all build on each other, and skilling up in one or more positions you to collaborate more successfully with your team, whether in the office or virtually.
