A Look Back at the Year’s Sustainability Milestones

As we kick off a new fiscal year, it’s a great time to reflect on several significant environmental milestones Salesforce accomplished in FY2018.

Let’s take a look at the milestones that we are proud of:

Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions – April, 2017

We announced that Salesforce achieved net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and is delivering a carbon neutral cloud to all of our 150,000 customers. We achieved this by building on longstanding efforts to drive efficiency in our operations, executing two 12-year renewable energy agreements, and supporting sustainable development projects through the purchase of high-quality carbon credits.

Earth Month – April, 2017

Employees celebrated Earth Month bigger and better than ever. Our green team, Earthforce, made up of over 6,000 employee champions, brought sustainability to life throughout the month. Together employees logged over 3,000 hours of volunteer time, partnering with 64 external organizations throughout the month. In addition, 25 offices across the world held Earth Day celebrations.

HQ Renewable Energy – August, 2017

We announced that two office towers at the heart of our global headquarters in San Francisco are now sourcing 100% renewable energy through the San Francisco Public Utility Commission’s (SFPUC) CleanPowerSF program. Salesforce and the city of San Francisco are both committed to reaching 100% renewable energy and this achievement puts us one step closer to that goal.

Impact Investment Fund – October, 2017

We announced the $50 million Salesforce Impact fund to accelerate the growth of companies using Salesforce technology to address challenges across workforce development, equality, sustainability and the social sector. We believe the business of business is to do good and Salesforce Ventures is uniquely positioned to catalyze the growth of companies who are using Salesforce to build products and solutions that make the planet a better place.

Dreamforce – November, 2017

At Dreamforce 2017 we worked hard to bring the environment to life by creating inspiring sessions, hosting a dedicated environment day, and integrating operational sustainability initiatives behind the scenes. Thought leaders from multiple sectors discussed how climate change inspires them to act now. We were joined by ocean advocates for an eye-opening session that helped explain how technology is playing an important role in developing creative solutions that benefit both our oceans and communities. On Environment Day, we focused on climate, parks, and oceans, all of which are inextricably linked to the success of our global communities and economies.

Outstanding Corporate Leader Award – December 2017

It’s always fun to win awards and we were very proud to be named Sustainable Roundtable’s 2017 Outstanding Corporate Leader. Sustainable Roundtable is an organization that provides strategic advisory and support services for sustainability program management.

Blackwater Announcement – January, 2018

We made a big splash by announcing that Salesforce Tower will feature the largest on-site water recycling system in a commercial high-rise building in the United States. In collaboration with the City of San Francisco and Boston Properties, the blackwater system will be installed in Salesforce Tower, making it the first partnership in the U.S. between a city government, a building owner and a tenant to support blackwater reuse in a commercial high-rise building. The system will provide water recycling capabilities for all tenants in Salesforce Tower, saving 7.8 million gallons of water each year. Look at a visual of the system in the tower here.
