The U.S. Government and its contractors have unique challenges like handling and protecting sensitive data in the face of increased cybersecurity threats while also meeting compliance mandates in an evolving regulatory landscape. Government Cloud helps them meet unique security and compliance needs.

The main difference is that Government Cloud Plus supports Impact Level 4 (“IL4”) while Government Cloud Plus - Defense supports Impact Level 5 (“IL5”). For more details, see this comparison.
Salesforce Government Cloud Plus maintains a FedRAMP High Provisional Authority to Operate (P-ATO) from the Joint Authorization Board (JAB).

Government Cloud Plus - Defense customers are required to use the Common Access Card as the MFA token for login. All orgs in Government Cloud Plus - Defense will use salesforce.mil FQDNs which uses the DISA Boundary Cloud Access Point (BCAP), NIPR-net IP address range, and EEMSG for email security.
Government contractors directly supporting Department of Defense mission owners with Impact Level 5 data can use Government Cloud Plus - Defense on behalf (or in direct support of a contract with) a mission owner. Government contractors cannot purchase it for internal use.
