Salesforce today announced Data Governance for the AI Enterprise, a new suite of tools to help IT teams address increasingly strict regulations governing generative AI.
Why it’s relevant: Lawmakers worldwide are under pressure to establish guardrails around the security, accuracy, and management of data used in generative AI applications. Many observers predict we’ll see more regulations like the EU’s AI Act, which seeks to ensure the safe and ethical development, deployment, and use of AI in Europe. As a result, promoting strong data governance and security is now the #1 priority for Chief Data Officers, according to Salesforce research.*
Innovation in action: Salesforce’s Data Governance for the AI Enterprise suite can help companies quickly prepare for current and future regulations. Built on the Salesforce platform and integrated with Data Cloud, Data Governance for the AI Enterprise helps customers better govern their data to meet AI-related policies. Suite features include:
- Advanced data management: Customers can take more control over their data with new capabilities like Salesforce Archive for storing large volumes of inactive data at scale and new Salesforce Backup enhancements for restoring data in the event of corruption or loss. Salesforce Out of Region Disaster Recovery similarly provides an additional layer of protection for customers who experience unforeseen business disruptions.
- Enhanced data security: With Database Encryption, a new feature of Salesforce Shield — Salesforce’s suite of data security and monitoring tools — customers can encrypt all fields at the database tier. To surface user activity faster and with greater flexibility, event log data is now represented as a standard object with Event Monitoring: Event Log Objects. Finally, new Custom Metrics in Salesforce Security Center enable organizations to create and monitor the KPIs that are most relevant to them.
- Increased data privacy: IT teams can de-identify sensitive data at scale with enhancements to Data Mask, ensuring that individual privacy is protected. They can also store customer data on Hyperforce with Privacy Center. For businesses using Data Cloud, customers can encrypt sensitive data with Platform Encryption, de-identify sensitive data with Data Mask for Data Cloud Sandboxes, and capture consent and customer preferences with Privacy Center: Preference Manager.
The Salesforce perspective: “Data governance is a top concern for every organization deploying AI because of the difficult and complex regulatory landscape,” said Alice Steinglass, EVP and GM for Salesforce Platform. “Salesforce’s Data Governance for the AI Enterprise suite will help companies address those challenges head-on.”
