Salesforce Data Governance FAQ

Governance is broadly defined as the rules or policies by which companies are run and how decisions are made, which is especially important if you are subject to industry regulations. Data governance involves the management and regulation of data assets to ensure they are used effectively, efficiently, and responsibly within an organization. It encompasses the processes, policies, standards, and metrics that ensure the integrity and security of the data used across various business units. Read more in our blog here.

No matter the size or industry of your company, a data governance strategy is important. The general principles of data governance cover five main areas:
1. Access - who is authorized to view, edit, or use data?
2. Accuracy - what processes are in place to ensure the data is relevant and recent?
3. Privacy - how is data handled to ensure its privacy according to key regulations?
4. Security - what processes are in place to ensure you are lowering risks to your data?
5. Retention - how long do you need to hold onto data based on your business requirements or key regulations?

Having a strong data governance strategy in place helps you keep trust at the forefront of daily practices. Data governance also prevents data disconnects that can cause business inefficiencies, create reputational harm or damage csutomer trust, and lead to costly noncompliance fees.

It is highly dependent on the needs of your business. You should consider your data governance strategy and find products that support your goals. Salesforce's Trusted Services products are a good place to start when considering your data governance requirements.
