I grew up in a small town in rural Germany.
And it was just the most normal thing in the world
to ride your bike everywhere.
It was the default mode of transport
for pretty much every journey.
And then I came to London.
London's roads are mayhem, right?
There's tiny roads, too many cars,
and way too many delivery vans
and really bad pollution as a result of this.
Mathias and I, we both went to Kings college, London
and when we were out riding bikes,
I think every third vehicle was
a parcel delivering diesel van.
And eCommerce is expected to double in the next 10 years.
And if eCommerce is about to double,
that means parcel delivery is expected to double,
then a local air pollution
and greenhouse emissions is about to double.
So we need to solve this problem now
because otherwise all the problems will just
multiply and compound exponentially.
Parcel delivery needs to be disrupted.
If it's not left to us to disrupt this industry,
who is it going to be left to?
We knew we had to figure out
what was the best way to deliver parcels.
We knew we had to do it ourselves.
That's when we started Hived.
Emissions contribute to air pollution,
There are 40,000 deaths annually
in the UK and 10,000 deaths alone in London.
And that's just due to direct air pollution.
People inhaling diesel fumes.
The problems of parcel delivery,
local air pollution, and greenhouse mission
aren't just localized in London.
It is a huge part of the overall
problem of climate change.
I know when I am having conversations with my friends
it is about climate change.
We want to create that change for future generations.
one of the biggest challenges that
we face is because of our age.
People thought two young people were
building a parcel delivery network.
I think the reason why no one's really done this
before is just because it's so complex and so hard.
But I think being young just gives us this sort
naivety that everything is possible
and being an environmentally conscious company
it's not just good for the planet,
but it's also extremely good for business.
All eCommerce companies need the solution
which is zero emission mass market parcel delivery.
Delivering every single parcel by bikes,
by vehicles that are powered
by renewable energy and not emitting anything,
any diesel fumes, nothing.
The transport sector is the largest contributor
to greenhouse gas emissions in the UK.
And then obviously when it comes to the problem
last small deliveries are really, really harmful.
As parcel of delivery increases,
and the last mile part of the journey increases loads
more diesel trucks to enter in the city center.
What that means increased pollution, increased idling,
and it is just horrible for cities.
The legacy parcel players have effectively
built their networks 50 plus years ago.
And the world was a completely different place
the environment was no concern whatsoever for them
but neither were data or technology.
And it became very apparent
that technology would be able to solve
so many of these problems that the drivers, dispatchers,
the general system, every stakeholder involved
in this process actually face.
The logistics industry is incredibly hard.
The way to move past any challenges is a clear vision
And you need to have the inherent faith
and belief that whatever challenge you're facing
We were green from the start.
We didn't want to convert an old traditional model.
We started off green in everything we do
backed by data, technology, treating people fairly.
Our company's mission is to move the world's goods
and parcels in the cleanest,
greenest, and most responsible way.
Parcel delivery, delivered by the traditional diesel trucks
emits roughly around 3.6 kg of carbon emissions.
Every time Hived delivers a parcel, we emit zero.
If we can solve this problem in London,
we're the oldest cities in the world,
we can solve this problem anywhere.
Our customers and other e-commerce companies
are crying out for our solution.
They need to reduce their emissions.
at the market of which parcel delivery company
it's default that they choose Hived
because they're reducing their emissions,
and they're also getting a better delivery service.
We are at our studio here at Been London,
and we turn materials that would
otherwise end up in landfill
into practical, everyday hand bags.
And we wanted to find a delivery partner that would care
about the environment and the carbon footprint
So this is how we came across Hived.
Our customers love the fact
that it's a zero emissions delivery,
and it works with everything
we are trying to do at the impact first approach.
Technology is absolutely fundamental
to the success of our business.
We embed technology in absolutely every single
That gives us a competitive advantage.
It helps us identify what decisions to actually make
in the real world, what to constantly improve,
and build a better experience for parcel delivery.
If we started high 10 years ago,
it would be very difficult
or impossible to do what we are doing today.
Machine learning, AI, data analysis,
all of these things have advanced so much
that now it really is the right time to bring them
to the parcel delivery industry
and make sure that the power is unleashed.
For instance, for drivers, the information that
they will receive on their handout devices
guide them through their day
and make sure that the decisions
and the roots on their schedule
are in the most optimal way.
We look at every moment of the chain
from when we collect a parcel,
until we deliver a parcel.
We're using cutting edge data and technology.
We do everything differently.
(indistinct conversation)
I think every employee that we hire,
they all need to be motivated by the mission.
But if everyone is motivated on the same mission,
It makes me feel happy to be like a part of a good cause
because a lot is changing in the world right now.
Global warming is such a big issue
and we are reducing the amount of emissions
you're putting out there.
You're actually making an impact and helping the world.
So it's nice to kind of be part of that journey.
You're actually saving the planet and yeah,
you can call me Superwoman if you like.
So we've seen great success in London so far.
We are still a very young company
but we work with hundreds of retailers.
This is a really exciting time for Hived
because instead of just saving tens of thousands of tons
of carbon emissions in London alone,
we can do this in every city.
Now we're scaling nationwide and soon Europe.
And after Europe, the rest of the world.
We're both just extremely motivated to make a change.
that we want to make a lasting impact.
It really sinks in and hits us,
when you see more high vehicles in our competitors,
I know we're creating cleaner communities.
Being a young ecopreneur made it a little bit challenging
cause for us at the start to get going.
But now we have got going.
And if we look back in like 50 years time
and we've changed parcel delivery,
We're trying to solve probably
the most complex problem in our industry.
then I would say start yesterday.
